Perennials are the backbone of a low-maintenance garden — plant once, harvest years of color, structure, and pollinator support. But the “plant and forget” myth leads to crowded, non-blooming, disease-prone clumps. Here is the selection, planting, and division calendar that keeps perennials performing like pros.

Selection matrix (choose 3–5 per bed for succession)

Season Sun (6+ hrs) Part Shade (3–5 hrs) Shade (<3 hrs)
Early Spring Creeping Phlox, Iberis, Hellebore Bleeding Heart, Brunnera, Pulmonaria Hellebore, Epimedium, Ferns
Late Spring Peony, Baptisia, Salvia Columbine, Foxglove, Geranium Hosta, Astilbe, Heuchera
Summer Coneflower, Black-eyed Susan, Daylily, Russian Sage, Catmint Astilbe (late), Japanese Anemone, Ligularia Hosta (flower), Ferns, Hakone Grass
Fall Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’, Aster, Goldenrod, Ornamental Grasses Japanese Anemone, Toad Lily, Actaea Toad Lily, Ferns, Heuchera (foliage)

Planting protocol (get it right once)

  1. Dig hole 2× width, same depth as pot
  2. Amend backfill: 70% native soil + 30% compost
  3. Tease circling roots, score root ball 1 in deep 4×
  4. Plant crown at soil level (not buried, not exposed)
  5. Backfill, firm gently, water to settle (eliminate air pockets)
  6. Mulch 2–3 in (keep 2 in clear of crown)
  7. Water deep 2×/wk first season (establish deep roots)

The division calendar (renew vigor, get free plants)

Plant Type When Frequency Method
Spring bloomers (Phlox, Iris, Peony) Late Summer / Early Fall 3–5 yr Dig clump, cut rhizomes/roots, 3–5 eyes per division
Summer bloomers (Daylily, Hosta, Coneflower) Early Spring (before growth) 3–4 yr Fork clump, pull apart fans/crowns, 3+ shoots each
Fall bloomers (Sedum, Aster, Grass) Early Spring 3–5 yr Divide crown, 3+ stems each
Grasses (Miscanthus, Calamagrostis, Panicum) Early Spring (before shoots) 3–4 yr Saw/axe clump, 3+ tillers each

Deadheading & cutback rules

  • Deadhead: Repeat bloomers (Salvia, Catmint, Coneflower, Gaillardia) → cut to lateral bud
  • Leave seed heads: Coneflower, Black-eyed Susan, Grasses, Sedum — winter interest + bird food
  • Cut back: Late winter (Feb–Mar) — cut to 2–3 in above crown. Evergreen perennials (Hellebore, Epimedium): remove only tattered leaves.

One-line verdict

Pick 3–5 per bed for 4-season succession, plant crown-level in amended soil, divide on calendar — perennials that bloom bigger every year with less work.
