How Much Mulch Do You Need? Cubic Yards, Bags and Depth Guide

The formula

Length × width × (depth ÷ 12) = cubic feet, then ÷ 27 for cubic yards. One 2-cu-ft bag covers 8 sq ft at 3 inch depth. A 10×8 ft bed at 3 inch needs 20 cu ft = 0.74 cu yd, about 10 bags. Verify with our Mulch Calculator.

Worked example: new 12×6 ft bed

Area = 72 sq ft. At 3 inch depth: 72 × 0.25 = 18 cu ft = 0.67 cu yd = 9 bags of 2 cu ft. At 2 inch for vegetables: 12 cu ft = 6 bags. Bulk delivery beats bags past 2–3 cu yd — one bulk yard typically costs less than 14 bags.

Depth rules that prevent plant death

  • Flower beds: 2–3 inch of shredded bark or wood chips
  • Vegetables: 2 inch maximum, pulled 3 inch back from stems
  • Trees: 3 inch doughnut ring, never piled volcano-style against the trunk
  • Paths and playgrounds: 3–4 inch coarse material, topped yearly

Mulch types compared

Shredded hardwood mats together and resists washout on slopes. Pine bark nuggets last longest but float in heavy rain. Straw is cheap for vegetable paths but sprouts grain. Dyed mulches look sharp yet fade in one season — natural bark ages better.

Bags vs bulk delivery

Under 1 cu yd, bags win on convenience and weed-free sourcing. Over 2–3 cu yd, bulk saves 30–50% but dumps one big pile — lay tarps and wheelbarrow within a week before it compacts. One full-size pickup holds roughly 2 cu yd heaped.

FAQ

  • Landscaping fabric under mulch? Skip it in planting beds — it starves soil and weeds root through anyway. Use it only under paths.
  • When to top up? Every spring; decomposition eats 1 inch per year.
  • Termites and mulch? Keep wood mulch 6 inch below siding and 12 inch from foundations.

Limits

Bag volumes vary ±10% by brand and moisture. Topsoil and compost use the same volume math but different weights — a yard of wet topsoil can exceed 2,000 lbs, so check delivery limits. More in our garden guides.

Seasonal timing

Mulch in mid-spring after soil warms — mulching frozen ground delays spring growth by weeks. Refresh thin spots in fall so roots enter winter insulated. Never pile fresh wood chips against new transplants; nitrogen tie-up yellows them for a season. Aged bark or composted mulch is safest around vegetables.
